Weld River Fossicking Area

One of Tasmania's handful of set-aside public fossicking grounds runs for two square kilometres along the Weld River where it meets the Tasman Highway at Moorina, deep in the state's northeast tin country. The river gravels, shed from surrounding granite and basalt, carry dark-blue sapphire alongside topaz, zircon, spinel, chrysoberyl and cassiterite left from the old tin workings. No licence is needed to sieve and pan here. One collecting area is a walk in from Frome Road, opposite the Moorina golf course.
