Victoria Park Nature Reserve, Alstonville NSW

One of the last surviving remnants of the Big Scrub, the original rainforest of the Northern Rivers, stands in this reserve near Alstonville, between Lismore and Ballina. An easy wheelchair-accessible boardwalk runs beneath ancient figs, black beans, bangalow palms and ferns, with red-legged pademelons and wompoo fruit-doves among the residents. Displays along the way describe how the Widjabul people of the Bundjalung nation used the local plants and animals, and a wheelchair-accessible picnic area with barbecue facilities sits beside the forest.
