Porcupine Gorge

Porcupine Gorge National Park, Hughenden QLD

North of Hughenden in the dry inland, Porcupine Gorge cuts a sudden, spectacular chasm into the tableland - 'Australia's little Grand Canyon', its coloured sandstone walls dropping to a permanent creek and the striking Pyramid rock formation below. A steep track descends to the gorge floor, where waterholes, sandy beaches and towering cliffs reward the climb, and a lookout on the rim gives the easy view. The surrounding country is flat, dry and endless, which makes the gorge all the more astonishing. A campground on the rim lets visitors catch it at first and last light.
