Narrandera Koala Reserve

Narrandera, Riverina, NSW

River red gum forest on the Murrumbidgee at Narrandera, where koalas were reintroduced in 1972 after seven decades without a recorded sighting in the district. The population has come through heatwaves, floods and fire since, and the Koala walking track — walkable or cyclable — winds through the reserve, with the best chance of a sighting in branches overhanging the river, where the animals retreat in hot weather. Picnic tables sit by the water. Access to the Murrumbidgee Valley Nature Reserve picnic area runs through the council-managed Narrandera Flora and Fauna Reserve.
