Mungo National Park

Mungo National Park, Buronga NSW

In the semi-arid far south-west, Mungo protects part of the Willandra Lakes World Heritage area, a system of lake beds dry for tens of thousands of years. Along the old shoreline, the eroding sand and clay of the Walls of China stand in pale, sculpted ridges, and it was here that Mungo Lady and Mungo Man were found - the oldest human remains yet discovered in Australia, evidence of at least forty-five thousand years of continuous Aboriginal presence. Tours with Aboriginal guides read the country's deep history. At sunset the lunette glows and the silence is total. It is one of the most significant landscapes on the continent.
