Hancock Gorge

Pilbara, WA

A narrow slot canyon in Karijini National Park with polished red walls and a spiderwalk section where visitors shimmy between the gorge walls above water.

Know before you go

This is a Class 5 route for very experienced, very fit walkers only: about 1.5km return but allow two hours, with a steep descent on uneven rock steps and ladders. Wear footwear you can walk through water in and that grips wet rock. The trail ends at Kermits Pool — do not continue past it, as penalties apply. Do not climb on the narrow ledges; slips here can be fatal. Gorge pools run extremely cold, particularly April to September, and hypothermia is a real risk.
