Gumeracha Goldfields, Mount Crawford Forest

Mount Crawford Forest Reserve, Gumeracha SA

In the Mount Crawford Forest Reserve near Gumeracha in the Adelaide Hills, a set of marked areas is open for recreational fossicking under a ForestrySA permit. The district has been gold country since the 1850s, and stream gravels here still hold fine gold along with specimens of opal, garnet, beryl, kyanite and tourmaline. Only hand tools and metal detectors are allowed, holes must be backfilled, and the forest closes on total fire ban days. Maps of the designated areas are available from ForestrySA.
