Cataract Gorge

A stunning natural gorge just minutes from Launceston city centre, featuring walking trails, a chairlift, swimming basin, and peacocks.

The reserve is free and open around the clock, a short drive from central Launceston. The free outdoor pool at First Basin only opens November to March — the basin itself is cold, deep and unpatrolled outside that. The chairlift across the gorge runs from 9am, finishing at 5.30pm in summer and 4.30pm in winter, and is ticketed separately.
