Adelaide Zoo

Frome Road, Adelaide SA

In parkland on the banks of the Torrens a few minutes from the city centre, Adelaide Zoo is the second-oldest in the country, opened in 1883, and keeps much of its Victorian character in heritage aviaries and mature gardens. It is the only zoo in Australia to hold giant pandas, and its collection ranges from Sumatran tigers and orangutans to a strong showing of native mammals and birds. The elegant old enclosures and the tree-lined paths make for a genteel day out, easily paired with the adjacent botanic garden and the museums of North Terrace.
